PhD 1984, MIT, Artificial Intelligence Guggenheim Fellow; IEEE Life Fellow; ACM Fellow Fellow, Royal Society of London Fellow, Royal Society of Canada Laureate Distinguished Fellow, IETI Member, Canadian Academy of Engineering 2020 IEEE Computer Pioneer Award 2005 Academy Award ("Oscar") for Technical Achievement
Professor Demetri Terzopoulos, winner of the Computer Pioneer Award and the Academy Award for Technical Achievement, has joined NAAI. He is a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences, the Canadian Academy of Sciences, the Canadian Academy of Engineering, and the European Academy of Sciences. Renowned as the founder of the field of computer vision, he holds multiple titles including Fellow of the American Computer Society (ACM) and Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He has made outstanding contributions in the fields of computer vision, computer graphics, medical imaging, and computer-aided design.
Terzopoulos obtained his PhD in EECS (Artificial Intelligence) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1984 and worked as a research scientist at the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His research interests are extensive, including computer graphics, computer vision, medical imaging, and computer-aided design. In the past 40 years, he has published over 300 research papers and multiple academic works, and has been listed as one of the most cited authors in the fields of engineering and computer science by ISI and other citation indexes.
Terzopoulos has made groundbreaking contributions in the field of computer vision, particularly in his research on deformable models in medical image analysis. In 1987, the Snake model proposed by him and Kass et al. won an award in the first issue of the IJCV Marr Prize special issue, becoming one of the most cited papers in computer science. This model has a wide range of applications in image segmentation and reconstruction. In addition, he was awarded the 2005 Academy Award for Technical Achievement for his pioneering work in realistic fabric simulation for movies.
Terzopoulos is currently an outstanding professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and has given speeches at multiple international conferences and forums, sharing his research findings and insights. His work has not only had a significant impact in academia, but also attracted widespread attention in industry and investment.
